ENG 412 - Caribbean Literature3 cr. The literature of Caribbean people represent an array of writing in each genre. The critical term here, diaporic, underscores the importance of a comparativist approach to these literatures with a view towards cultivating the capacity to relate works from disparate linguistic and cultural traditions within the diaspora though studied in English. To this end, this course in Caribbean literary studies will move from the slave narrative to classic novels to Nobelpoets, short story writers as well. Some attention will be paid to authors such as Sir Walter Rodney, though a historian from Granada, a significant intellectual whose work provides a way of understanding some of the central ideas in Caribbean African and Latin American cultures: “mestizaje” nationalism, and popular culture, among others.
